Reliability of European Beacons
in the First Half of Year 2000

All European beacons heard in the UK during the first six months of 2000 by members of the Six and Ten Reporting Club are listed on this page. The table is ordered by average daily reliability, measured as the percentage of days per month when the beacon was logged.

Propagation in the first quarter was mainly by means of the F-layer - either by a single hop direct path (e.g. OH9TEN, UA4NM) or by backscatter where the direct skip distance is too short (e.g. LA4TEN, DK0TEN). Some beacons are heard by both direct and scatter modes depending on MUF and season (e.g. OH2B).

In the summer months, sporadic E provides the predominant propagation mechanism, favouring beacons 1000-2000 km from the UK. EA3JA is a good example of a beacon heard well via sporadic E in the summer, but only occassionally (by backscatter) in the winter months.
